GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Crofton finished third in the Nebraska Class C girls state golf tournament, which concluded a two-day run at Indianhead Golf Course here Tuesday.
The Warriors totaled 791 with scores of 394 and 397, trailing state runner-up Minden (789) by just two strokes. Kearney Catholic won the team title with a 753. The top two teams take home trophies, so Crofton just missed collecting hardware.
Freshman sensation Danielle Lemek of Doniphan-Trumbull turned in back-to-back rounds of 76 for a 152, earning what could be her first of four straight state individual titles. Crofton's Molly Zavadil, a sophomore, finished fourth with 86-82--168.
Crofton also counted senior Courtney Foxhoven with 103-100--203, junior Crystal Evans 96-112--208 and junior Sara Kohles 109-103--212.
Columbus Scotus finished fourth in the team standings at 799, followed by Grand Island Central Catholic (818), Norfolk Catholic (826), Doniphan-Trumbull (871), Tri-County (877), Omaha Brownell-Talbot (882), Bridgeport (895), Pierce (902), Broken Bow (903), Johnson County Central (934), Kimball (950) and Chadron (981).
Scottsbluff captured the Class B title at Riverside Country Club here, outdistancing Beatrice 696-729. Omaha Marian, meanwhile, won a playoff with Fremont for the Class A crown at Norfolk Country Club. Norfolk was third in the Class A team standings.
