Man injured when semi truck hits cow

ALTON, Iowa -- A Russell, Minn., man was injured Thursday when the semi truck he was a passenger in struck a cow.
The accident happened at 10:38 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 60 and 470th Street, about one mile south of Alton.
The Sioux County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that Mark Welu, 54, of Nisswa, Minn., was driving a 2007 Freightliner Semi truck southbound on Highway 60 when he struck a cow in the roadway. The semi truck then struck the cement barrier of a bridge, entered the median, struck a guard rail and came to rest.
Passenger Leland Seiler, 53, was asleep in the sleeper section of the semi truck when the accident occurred and was transported by Alton Ambulance to Orange City Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
Welu was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, according to the sheriff's office.
The semi truck sustained approximately $30,000 damage, and the guard rail received $3,000 damage.
The accident remains under investigation.
