Posted: Friday, October 17, 2008
Bishop Heelan and East claimed team titles in the Missouri River Activities Conference cross country meet Thursday at SYA Complex in Riverside.

The Crusader boys, ranked 11th in Class 3A by the Iowa Association of Track & Cross Country Coaches, set a new MRAC record, totaling 28 points to win the boys meet. The mark was the best winning total in the conference's nine-year history.

Nate McKewon, Iowa's 17th-ranked Class 3A runner, ran 16:14.73 to win his second straight conference individual title. The Crusader senior led Coach Dan O'Brien's squad to its third straight MRAC team title.

Joel Dorsett of North was second while Kyle Blue of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson and Barry Hodapp of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln finished third and fourth, respectively.

Heelan placed all seven runners in the top 13, breaking the former conference record for lowest team total of 33 points set by West in 2001.

Meanwhile, the East High girls team won its first-ever MRAC cross country championship, led by individual champion Shelby Houlihan.

Houlihan, a sophomore, won her second straight MRAC title in 14:22.48, beating teammate Ellen Dougherty, who ran second in 15:17.09.

The Black Raiders of Coach Nick Gaul scored 34 points, while runner-up Bishop Heelan had 46.

The Crusaders were led by freshman Kaylene Leiting, who finished third in 15:33.65.

Stephen Chicoine of Bishop Heelan and Betsy Stewart of North were the individual winners in the junior varsity races.

The Class 3A and 4A district meets are next Thursday in Algona and Council Bluffs, respectively.
