CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Phyllis A. Henke, 75, of Cherokee died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at Cherokee. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Phyllis was born Feb. 19, 1933, near Marcus, Iowa, to Vincent L. and Luella (Grauer) Garvin. She was baptized and attended Holy Name Church and School in Marcus, graduating in 1950. Phyllis attended National Business School in Sioux City for a year, and worked for Attorney Mark Bancroft in Marcus, Iowa, until she was married.
She married Cletus Henke on Sept. 29, 1953, in Marcus. As a girl growing up, she enjoyed school activities, roller skating, neighborhood ball on Sunday afternoon, baking and cooking. Most recently, she enjoyed cooking, playing cards, especially bridge, gardening, cake decorating, taking trips with her husband and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was a faithful member of the Maryhill Guild and held many offices. She was a member of the Renew Group and was also a volunteer at the Work Activity Center.
She is survived by her husband, Cletus; a son, Dale Henke and his wife, Dawn of Cherokee; a daughter, Ann Lundell and her husband, Mark of Cherokee; a daughter-in-law, Lynda Best and her husband, Steve of Brayton, Iowa; two sisters, Ruth Vander Haag and her husband, John of Sanborn, Iowa, and Mary Brady of Huntington, Calif.; a brother, George Garvin and his wife, Kelly of Meriden, Iowa; grandchildren, Brent Henke and his wife, Carly of Kansas City, Mo., Lee Henke of Cherokee, Patty Henke of Ames, Iowa, Wendi Langel and her husband, Tyler of Omaha, Lindsay Henke of Omaha, Whitney Henke of Des Moines, Sara Lucas and her husband, Brandon of Cherokee, and Molly Lundell of Cherokee; stepgrandchildren, Abby Rasmussen and her husband, Joe, Sara Best and Jodi Best; three great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Velma Garvin of Marcus, Cathy Garvin of Mankato, Minn., and Jackie Letsche and her husband, Charles of Cherokee; and a brother-in-law, Jim Brady of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David in 2004; three brothers, Dick Garvin, infant Charles Garvin and Lee Garvin.
