Fairbury, Neb., farmer enters plea in animal-abuse case

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A southeast Nebraska farmer and dairy owner has pleaded no contest to reduced charges in an animal abuse case.
Rex DeFrain, of Fairbury, was charged with two felony charges. Jefferson County officials removed about 80 dairy cows from his farm last month, accusing him of abandoning or neglecting an animal resulting in serious injury, illness or death.
DeFrain pleaded no contest on Monday to reduced misdemeanor charges. He faces a maximum sentence of a year behind bars, a $1,000 fine or both.
Sentencing is set for Dec. 15.
