AG announces agreement over drug marketing

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Attorney General Larry Long says an agreement has been reached that resolves a five-year investigation by 33 states concerning Pfizer's (FY'-zers) promotion of the drugs Celebrex and Bextra.
According to Long, the stipulated judgment means South Dakota's share of Pfizer Inc.'s $60 million payment to the states is $589,168.
The investigation began in 2003. Long says it was to determine whether Pfizer and another drug company misrepresented that Celebrex was safer and more effective than traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil and Aleve. He says additional concerns were raised about Bextra during the probe.
Among other stipulations, Long says the judgment means Pfizer must submit television drug commercials to the Food and Drug Administration for approval.
