E.coli found in water supply in Bertrand
Posted: Sunday, October 26, 2008
BERTRAND, Neb. (AP) -- Bertrand residents are being asked to boil water or use bottled after a test showed E. coli in the city's water supply.
Utilities superintendent Matthew Gregg says a sample tested positive for E. coli during routine, monthly testing. Two of four repeat samples were positive for coliform bacteria, but not E.coli; the other two were negative.
Gregg says the city's water tower is being disinfected, and additional tests are planned for Monday or Tuesday.
Symptoms of E. coli infection include stomach cramps and diarrhea that may turn bloody.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that E. coli sickens about 73,000 people and kills 61 each year in the United States.
