While the Sioux City Musketeers were futilely spinning their wheels, the Indiana Ice won at Russian roulette Sunday afternoon in the Tyson Events Center.
Indiana's Stanislav Galiev, a 16-year-old phenom from Moscow, Russia, victimized the Sioux City Musketeers in a clash of United States Hockey League co-division leaders, getting a three-goal hat trick in a 5-2 victory.
Sioux City jumped out to a 2-0 lead before a throng of 1,736, but the Musketeers went on the offensive fritz the rest of the way as the Ice improved to 7-1.
Two Indiana goals 51 seconds apart late in the second period rallied the Ice, who erased a 2-1 Sioux City lead with the outburst.
Galiev scored with 1:51 left in the second stanza and added anoher red-lighter on the power play with a minute left in the period. The goal came 12 seconds after Sioux City's Mitch Bruijsten was whistled off for an interference penalty.
"Stanislav Galiev is a special talent and we're extremely fortunate to have a player of his caliber,'' said Indiana Coach Jeff Blashill, who played three years with Des Moines in the USHL, then collegiately at Ferris State before ending a 10-season tenure as a college assistant (Ferris State and Miami, Ohio) by taking the Indiana coaching reins this season.
The loss foiled Sioux City's bid for a weekend sweep.
Coach Todd Knott's Musketeers had taken the measure of Omaha Friday at the Tyson and won on the road Saturday at Des Moines in a shootout, while Indiana had whipped Sioux Falls each night in Sioux Falls.
"We got a nice start, but I wasn't real comfortable even with a 2-0 lead,'' said Knott. "We didn't have that intensity you need each and every game.
"Sure, we had a long bus ride, but that's no excuse. You can't cheat the game and our guys didn't give an honest effort.''
The Musketeers, now 4-3-1 in the West, shared first-place with Lincoln, each with nine points, coming into the game. Indiana and Cedar Rapids shared first place in the East, each with a 6-1 record and 12 points.
Sioux City's Jake Johnson scored at 6:14 of the first period and Stephane Da Costa rifled in as pretty a goal (7th of the season) as you'll ever see in the National Hockey League at 4:26 of the second period to make it 2-0.
The shot, from the point, came so fast Ice goalie Chris Paliafito had no chance, but that was as good as the Musketeers were going to get.
Indiana's Chris Stafne spoiled Musketeer goaltender Steve Thompson's shutout bid with a goal at 9:33 of the second period.
The mad dashes of the Russian Galiev took over from there.
He got his third goal and the hat trick at 11:49 of the third period to make it 4-2.
"We just didn't have a very good effort,'' said Mike Keenan, the Sioux City captain. "It just wasn't there. We don't have any excuses. We got beat, period.''
In an odd scheduling quirk, the Musketeers do not play this weekend and return to action at home against Cedar Rapids and Green Bay Nov. 7-8.
