Race for Hope helps cancer patients

Posted: Tuesday, October 28, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- The 12th annual June E. Nylen Cancer Center Race for Hope set a new record for participation and support.

The Sept. 20 event at Adams Nature Preserve at McCook Lake attracted 600 participants. More than $28,000 was raised, thanks in part to a major donation from Steve Martin of Pacific City Graphics in South Sioux City.

Martin, honorary race ambassador for the Cancer Center, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma four years ago, said Jean Gill, race director. His message is clear, "If you think something's not right, get it checked out as soon as possible. I was fortunate it was caught when it was. I'd say I felt symptoms for less than two months before I got the diagnosis."

Two years in a row the team competition went to VHP, Kevin Vanderlinden, Shelby Houlihan and Bob Prince, who took the trophy with a combined time of 58.45.

Winners and times of the open divisions are: 15K, Damian Brand with a time of 58:47 and Connie Houlihan at 59:00. In the 5K, Greg Meister completed the race at 18:15 and Shelby Houlihan at 19:03. In the 15K Masters division, Tim Heaton had the winning time,1:02:29, followed by Andreitte Wickstrom at 1:09:43. For the 5K masters, Kevin Vanderlinden clocked in at 19:02 and Susan Bies at 23:37.

Race for Hope proceeds will be used to purchase televisions for the group treatment area at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center and patient care kits.

"We increased registrations by 31 percent from last year," said Gill. "We had participants from eight states, the farthest being from Florida."
