Stream will double work force

Sergeant Bluff site will add up to 700 new jobs

By Dave Dreeszen | Posted: Thursday, October 30, 2008
SERGEANT BLUFF -- Stream Global Services plans to hire as many as 700 new jobs at its contract call center here, more than doubling its local employment, a company spokesman said today.

The bulk of the added job growth is tied to the Boston-based business process outsourcer landing a major contract with a leading technology firm, said spokesman Bob Dechant.

"We're in the process of doing a significant ramp up in Sergeant Bluff,'' Dechant said said. "It'll be great for the community. We're estatic.''

Dechant would not publicly identify the client. But the Sergeant Bluff center has been advertising to fill positions to support its new technical support client, Apple Computers. According to the online ads, hourly wages start at $11.

The largest employer in Sergeant Bluff, Stream currently has about 500 workers at its center, which opened in September 2006 in the former MCI call center. By year's end, the company expects to add upwards of an additional 500 to 700 new full-time, part-time and seasonal positions.

To make room for the added people, desks and computers, the company plans to fill all of the vacant space in the three-building complex, located just off Interstate 29. At its peak, MCI's employment in the center exceeded 1,300.

Since the Stream center opened two years ago, it has predominantly provided technical support and customer service for high-tech companies, including Sirius satellite radio.

Under the Stream Global Services banner, the company's executive leadership group has plans for additional long-term growth into the larger space of the integrated business process outsourcer. Those services could include sales, order entry, customer inquiries, billing and collections.

Site director Matt Skuodas said the Sergeant Bluff site also has landed two other new contracts, but would not identify the firms, other than to say one is an accounting software firm and the other is a sporting goods retailer.

Halloween party
SERGEANT BLUFF -- Stream, which is hiring upwards of 500 new employees, will host a Halloween party for local children Thursday in its Sergeant Bluff location.
About 800 children from area elementary and middle schools will visit a series of trick-or-treat stations with the company's team managers serving as guides.
Site director Matt Skuodas, a native of Lyons, Neb. who recently returned to the area, said the company has several hundred pounds of candy in supply, which will be distributed across two of the site's three buildings.
"It's a great opportunity for us to open our doors to members of our community, and coming up on our busiest time of the year, it's a great chance for our employees to just have a little fun,'' Skuodas said.

" Nice to see the company expanding. It would be nice to call a tech support line for once and not get a barely intelligible Indian accent on the other end. We need to bring jobs back to America. "
