All-State nod sounds sweet in Sibley

SIBLEY, Iowa -- Rachel Poss didn't sound confident. She didn't even stand to watch the all-state lists posted.

"We were putting the instruments and everything into the trailer," said Poss, a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School.

"Then Mr. Carlson came up and told me I had made it," Poss said of her band instructor, Peter Carlson. "I gave him the biggest hug!"

Like hundreds of Iowa high school musicians, Saturday was HUGE in the life of percussionist Poss. She auditioned for a spot with the 62nd Annual Iowa High School All-State Music Festival. Seventeen percussionists auditioned in Northwest Iowa. Two earned a spot in the band.

This is Poss' third year as an all-stater. She'll be one of 10 Sibley-Ocheyedan musicians performing at the Nov. 22 festival in Ames, the most in at least 25 years for the Generals' band program. The event is broadcast twice over the Thanksgiving holiday on Iowa Public Television.

Poss described the day as nerve-racking. After loading instruments early Saturday morning, the crew traveled to Storm Lake High School for her 10:45 a.m. audition. She played snare drum, tympani and marimba for a judge, selecting a longer solo on the marimba, her favorite instrument.

She then headed outside the room and waited. And waited. And waited.

The judge asked six of the 17 to return for a recall performance. Like the initial audition, these second efforts took 20 minutes apiece.

"It was a very stressful day of waiting," said Poss, the daughter of Wayne Poss and Dan and Brenda Hoffman.

Unable to take the pressure, she began loading her instruments in a trailer for a long drive home. That's when Carlson emerged with the best of news. She had made it.

Whew!

"I wouldn't have been happy at all to be an alternate," said Poss, who intends to study music at the University of South Dakota. "People don't realize that just because you get in one year, you'll get in the next. Everybody you're competing against is getting better."

The all-state nod occurs during a busy stretch for this straight-A student. She's also Dorothy in the high school's "Wizard of Oz" production that shows Nov. 7-8.

Which is more difficult?

"The all-state audition was harder than being Dorothy so far," she said. "I'm not competing against anyone in playing Dorothy. Maybe I'll think differently about it next week when we perform."

Following is a list of Siouxland High School musicians who will play at the Iowa High School All-State Music Festival Nov. 22 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. Sioux City Metro musicians were listed in Sunday's Journal.
