Obama, McCain made many stops here

By Bret Hayworth | Posted: Sunday, November 02, 2008
Siouxlanders got to see presidential finalists John McCain and Barack Obama early and often in the 2008 campaign. Democrat Obama and Republican McCain first began a number of Sioux City (and many area) presidential campaign stops about one and one-half years out from the Nov. 4, 2008, election.

April 1, 2007: A day after his first Siouxland stops in Onawa and Denison, candidate Obama made a late morning appearance at the Palm Sunday service at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sioux City and spoke to 2,000 people at Morningside College in the afternoon. "He's young, he's not tainted by Washington, D.C., agendas," said 89-year-old Berget Starch.

April 27, 2007: Two days after officially announcing he was in the 2008 presidential field, McCain campaigned at the Sioux City Convention Center before 300 people. At the time, he was second in polls assessing Republican candidates, trailing Rudy Giuliani.

June 22, 2007: Wife Michelle Obama makes the only city speech by a candidate's spouse at a northside home, where 130 attendees outside fanned away the 85-degree heat. "I have a secret. I am married to The Answer," Michelle Obama said.

Obama spoke to 400 people at Irving Elementary School at a time when comments he made regarding sending U.S. troops into Pakistan dogged his campaign for a second week. The second question from the audience in Q&A dealt with that topic. Obama responded that if "the Pakistani government was unable or unwilling" to got after terrorists and there were "actionable intelligence reports" showing al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, as a last resort U.S. troops should enter and try to capture terrorists.

Sept. 11, 2007

On the six year anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, McCain came to a private hangar at Sioux Gateway Airport to kickoff his No Surrender Tour in front of 200 people. He appeared two days after congressional testimony by Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker on the war in Iraq. "...When you look at the change over the last six months, really, over the last four, five months, this strategy is working, it is succeeding," McCain said.

Oct. 26, 2007

McCain was one of two Republicans appearing at the historic Orpheum Theatre downtown as part of the Divided We Fail forum before 700 people. McCain was joined by Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who went on to win the Iowa caucuses, in discussing health care and financial issues.

Nov. 9, 2007

Obama spoke at West Middle School, the same day Democratic contender John Edwards spoke across town.

Dec. 17, 2007

Obama spoke to about 2,200 people at the Orpheum Theatre, making it site where both presidential finalists appeared.

Jan. 1, 2008

In a final stop before the Iowa caucuses, Obama spoke to 850 people at Irving Elementary School yet again -- on the same afternoon Hillary Clinton spoke at the Sioux City Art Center.
