Unwanted hinnies will go on auction

By Molly Montag | Posted: Tuesday, November 04, 2008
PRIMGHAR, Iowa -- Two hinnies found meandering around a Northwest Iowa golf course will be sold at a sheriff's auction.

O'Brien County Sheriff Michael Anderson said the hinnies, which were found on Oct. 14, have not been claimed despite media coverage and public notices.

They will be sold to the highest bidder at 10 a.m. Nov. 18 at the sheriff's office in Primghar.

Those who wish to take a look at the animals -- deputies believe the animals are female hinnies but aren't completely sure -- are asked to report to the sheriff's office at 9 a.m. the day of the sale.

The dark brown, mule-like animals are believed to be hinnies, which are offspring of a male horse and female donkey.

Deputies corralled the animals in Primghar after they were chased off the Primghar Golf and Country Club.

Officials believe the animals might have been abandoned, but can't know for sure.

"It's possible that's what happened and we're just hoping we don't see any more of it," Anderson said.

The sheriff's office is in the process of contacting about 15 people who asked to be advised of any plans to sell the animals.
