SIOUX CITY -- The Murray Apartments at 821 Jackson St. will be renovated into 22 apartments for low- to moderate-income adults who suffer from chronic mental illnesses.
The apartment building, which has fallen into a state of disrepair, has been vacant, Amy Keairns, the city's neighborhood services project coordinator, told the City Council Monday.
Upon her recommendation, the council agreed to loan the developer, Community Housing Initiatives (CHI), $160,000 from the HOME Investment Partnership Program. The apartment building used to have 32 units. CHI will make the apartments larger and furnish them with appliances. A community room and on-site parking will be provided.
Siouxland Residential Services Inc. will provide on-site support to residents, including medical, financial, referral, crisis intervention, goal setting, skills training, community integration, safety and nutrition information.
The application will be forwarded to the Iowa Finance Authority for the HOME money.
Keairns reported CHI has received HOME funds since 1992 for such projects in Sioux City as: the Carnegie Apartments, 705 Sixth St.; Call Terminal Apartments, 1106 Fourth St.; Court View Apartments, 2200 Court St.; Lessenich Place, 301 Fifth St.; Riverside Estates, 1104-1108 River Drive, and Woodbury Park Apartments, 419-429 S. Irene St.
