S.D. voter turnout of 75 percent called average

Posted: Wednesday, November 05, 2008
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Secretary of State Chris Nelson says voter turnout in the general election was about average, at a shade over 75 percent.

The state official had earlier predicted turnout of 75 percent to 78 percent.

Turnout of registered voters in South Dakota set a record 81 percent in 1968.

South Dakota currently has 530,462 registered voters. Nelson says 387,355 people went to the polls Tuesday.

The secretary of state says the election process went smoothly, with just a few minor problems that were quickly resolved.

Nelson closed his office shortly after 2 a.m. CST Wednesday, the earliest he can remember after a general election.
