DAKOTA CITY n Dakota City Mayor-elect James Roberts is ready to get to work expanding the town’s housing stock and finding assistance for first-time homebuyers, developing the tax base and improving the city’s streets.
Roberts will take the oath of office Dec. 4. His election as mayor Tuesday was his first run for public office. He defeated Randall Groetken by a vote of 331-215. There were six write-in votes.
Roberts, a native of Wyoming, moved to Dakota City with his wife, Tina, in 1997 to be closer to some of Tina’s family members in Iowa. The couple has two children, Matthew, 17, and Alaina, 12. Roberts worked as a Dakota County sheriff's deputy until starting his own business, Roberts Window and Siding, three years ago.
Roberts succeeds Charmaine Cantrell, who chose not to run for re-election after serving four years on the City Council and four years as mayor.
