VERMILLION, S.D. -- An exhibition of 60 Pulitzer Prize photographs is on display through Tuesday at the University of South Dakota.
"Capture the Moment" features compelling and powerful pictures awarded the highest honor in photojournalism. Among the images are: the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima, Babe Ruth's farewell at Yankee Stadium, Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald, Coretta Scott King at the funeral of her husband, the shooting at Kent State, Columbine, Elian Gonzalez and the World Trade Center Towers on 9/11.
According to Phil Carter, USD manager of media relations, originally, the photos were scheduled to be on campus from Oct. 8 through March 15, 2009 courtesy of the Newseum and Freedom Forum in Washington, D.C. The exhibit was a "tie-in" to the presentation of the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence to the Newseum's chief executive officer Charles L. Overby on Oct. 9.
"The Newseum donated the photos to USD because they were not in use at the time," Carter explained. "However, the exhibit is always in demand and a private group has since purchased the exhibit and will be showing it. So the exhibit is closing earlier than anticipated."
The traveling exhibit can be seen daily, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on both floors of the Al Neuharth Media Center, which is located at 555 Dakota St., Vermillion. Admission is free.
