SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Sanford Health in Sioux Falls is expanding its research efforts to include a rare genetic disease.

It's partnering with a California institute to study a group of diseases referred to as CDG that prevent cells in the body from attaching sugars to proteins. It can result in low blood sugar, seizures or severe developmental disabilities.

The project is one outgrowth of T. Denny Sanford's gift of $400 million to the health complex.

There are about 1,000 known CDG patients worldwide. It's thought that many children with developmental problems might have the disease but haven't yet been diagnosed.
