WAYNE, Neb. -- Wayne State's history-making football team will play Chadron State (10-1) in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday in Chadron, Neb.
Sunday, Wayne State received the school's first post-season playoff berth after concluding a 9-2 campaign Saturday with a 31-16 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory at the University of Mary.
Wayne, which finished 8-2 in the NSIC, has twice played in post-season games, but had never advanced to the playoffs. Chadron State, seeded third, has won three straight Rocky Mount Athletic Conference titles.
The 24-team Division II field was announced Sunday afternoon. Wayne's Saturday contest will start at 11 a.m. mountain time.
Coach Dan McLaughlin's Wildcats, who have won seven straight games, are seeded sixth in the Super 3 Region. Wayne State has made two appearances in the small college Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Mo., including a 20-13 loss last year to Missouri Western.
Nebraska-Omaha is the third school from the state in the field. The Mavericks (7-3) travel to Pittsburg (Kan.) State for a first-round game in Super Region 4. Pittsburg State is 10-1.
Wayne State's nine victories match the 1949 and 1993 squads for most wins in program history.
The Eagles and Wildcats have played 65 times since 1912, with Chadron holding a 36-28-1 lead in the series. They last met last season with Chadron winning 55-14.
The Wayne-Chadron winner moves to a second-round game at NSIC champion Minnesota-Duluth (11-0) on Nov. 22. Duluth is the second seed in the region and drew a first-round bye, as did top-seeded Grand Valley State (10-0) of Michigan. Grand Valley will meet the Ashland (Ohio)-Minnesota State Mankato winner.
Fifth-seeded Minesota-Mankato (9-2), also a member of the NSIC, and No. 4 Ashland (8-3) play Saturday at Ashland. One of Wayne's losses is to Minnesota Mankato, 26-21, on Sept. 20, and the other to NSIC rival St. Cloud State.
UNO, in the playoffs for the fourth straight year, is the sixth seed in Super Region 4. The Mavericks and third-seeded Gorillas played in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game Oct. 18, with Pittsburgh winning 35-28 at home.
Chadron State, ranked 12th nationally, has lost only to Pittsburgh State, 38-31.
The UNO-Pittsburg winner advances to play fellow MIAA member Northwest Missouri State (10-1) on Nov. 22.
Quarterfinals are Nov. 29, the semifinals Dec. 6 and the championship game Dec. 13 in Florence, Ala.
