Work on new Cedar Rapids federal courthouse to start in spring

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- After more than 10 years of planning and delays, construction is finally scheduled to start on a new federal courthouse in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Work on the courthouse, to be built along the Cedar River, is slated to start in the spring and be finished by 2012.

The project has been on the table for a decade, but fell behind other federal priorities -- until the floods hit in June.

Iowa's congressional delegation got $182 million for the project put into a special disaster relief package.

The flooding prompted the General Services Administration to look at other sites, but it decided on the location it selected in 2001. Agency spokesman Jim Snedegar says the courthouse will be built 8 feet above the existing lot, or 1 foot above the height of the flood.
