Women seek third trial in Bush rally strip search

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Two former Cedar Rapids teachers who claimed they were illegally strip searched after attending a President Bush rally in 2004 say they will seek a third trial in the case.

About two weeks ago, a jury in their second trial awarded more than $55,000 to Alice McCabe and Christine Nelson.

McCabe and Nelson's lawyer filed a motion last week that the jury verdict in the second trial was inconsistent, that there was a lack of time to prepare for retrial and that the retrial award was "so low as to shock the conscience," among other claims.

During their initial trial, the women were awarded a total of $750,000. But that award was thrown out by U.S. District Judge Linda Reade, who said it was excessive.

Reade lowered the award to $75,000 and told the woman they could accept it or have a retrial.

" I bet these women are thinking the third time is going to be the charm for them. I think they need to just move on and quit wasting taxpayer time and money....but wait I bet that is what they are after! "
