Sioux City's Heelan headed to 3A football finals

UPDATE

Posted: Monday, November 17, 2008
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Brandon Wegher ran for 254 yards and three touchdowns Monday as top-ranked Bishop Heelan rolled past No. 2-rated Clear Lake 27-7 in a Class 3A state semifinal football playoff game.

Wegher pushed his season rushing total to 2,997 yards, third highest in the history of Iowa prep football, in a game that saw Heelan take a commanding 27-0 advantage into halftime.

In a battle of two 12-0 teams, Clear Lake didn't avert a shutout until Jake Plagge's 23-yard touchdown pass to Steve Scarrow with 44 seconds to play, capping an 85-yard drive against Heelan reserves. The run-oriented Lions were limited to 45 yards on their first 37 rushing attempts before a 59-yard breakaway two plays before the late TD.

Wegher's season yardage trail only the state-record by Williamsburg's Dustyn Baethke in 2002, netting 3,109 yards, and a 3,082-yard campaign for Levi Ferguson of North Mahaska in 2005. Of course, he can overtake both of those players in Saturday's 4 p.m. state championship game against either fourth-ranked Decorah or No. 7 Pella, two more 12-0 teams that met later Monday night.
