KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) -- Wildlife officials say a record 20 whooping cranes have been observed along the Platte River in Nebraska this fall.
AIM Environmental Consultants owner Gary Lingle of Kearney and his staff recorded spottings of the rare cranes from Oct. 9 through Nov. 10. The group works for the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program.
The Whooping Crane Conservation Association estimates there are fewer than 500 whooping cranes in the wild. Adult whooping cranes stand about 5 feet tall and are white with a red crown and a long, dark pointed bill.
