CEDAR RAPIDs, Iowa (AP) -- A former U.S. Department of Homeland Security attorney has represented a former kosher slaughterhouse manager who faces immigration charges in federal court in Iowa.

Baruch Weiss, a partner in the Washington D.C. law firm Arent Fox, was given permission to practice in Iowa to represent Sholom Rubashkin at a bail hearing this week.

Rubashkin pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to federal immigration charges including conspiracy to harbor illegal immigrants for financial gain.

The charges stem from a May 12 immigration raid at the Agriprocessors Inc. plant in Postville.

A judge on Thursday ordered Rubashkin detained in another case where he's charged with bank fraud.

Weiss says he's discussing with the family whether he will continue to represent Rubashkin.
