ELK POINT, S.D. -- An Elk Point, S.D., man died after he was involved in a traffic accident in the parking lot of the Elk Point post office.
Elk Point Police Chief Ryan Fleek said police and first-responders were called about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday to a traffic accident at the city's post office, 123 W. Main St.
It appeared Cletus Laferriere, 78, had gotten out of his truck to drop off some mail, Fleek said, when he realized his truck was still in gear.
Although Laferriere attempted to get the truck out of gear as it rolled across the parking lot, he became trapped between the vehicle and the post office building.
He was flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City, and died later that day due to a heart attack.
An obituary for Cletus Laferriere is on page A9 in today's Journal.
