North second, Heelan third in preseason girls basketball rankings

North's girls basketball team is ranked second in Class 4A and Bishop Heelan is tabbed third in Class 3A in preseason rankings released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union on Thursday.
North returns three starters from last year's 20-5 team that fell 75-63 to Cedar Rapids Washington in the first round of the state tourney, including Jalyssa Cessar, who entered the game with a 13.3 scoring average. Erica Denney and Chelsie Stokes also started in the game for Coach Kirk Walker's Stars, who competed in the state tourney for the third straight season.
Carli Tritz averaged 14.2 points a year ago for Heelan, which won its first-ever state title following a 54-51 victory over Pella. Millie Niggeling had averages of 13 points and 11.1 rebounds for a team that competed in the state tournament for the second straight season and finished with a 25-2 record.
Denison-Schleswig is ranked 11th in Class 3A while three area teams are listed in the 2A rankings, Spirit Lake (second), Battle Creek-Ida Grove (fourth) and Unity Christian (12th).
Newell-Fonda is rated second in Class 1A. Akron-Westfield and Woodbury Central are tabbed seventh and 15th, respectively.
