What the Journal is thankful for
Posted: Thursday, November 27, 2008
On this Thanksgiving Day, we at the Journal are reminded of all the things we are thankful for. The list is, of course, long. But here are just a few of the things that, collectively, we can agree to honor with our thanks:
The Boy Scouts
At a time in our society when words such as honor, heroism and bravery have been cavalierly doled out for every minor achievement or event, the Boy Scouts who stood up in the wake of tragedy and helped their fellow Scouts after a tornado struck the Little Sioux Scout Ranch earlier this year remind us what courage is all about.
End of the election
No more commercials. No more phone calls at dinner time. No more talking heads on television arguing over inane details of the campaign. Perhaps now we can get back to caring about important things -- like Paris Hilton.
Low gas prices
Hallelujah, right? On Tuesday, we filled our gas tank for under $20. We thought those days were gone. Sure, there's still a lot of negative economic news out there, but we can all appreciate paying less at the pump.
Our soldiers
Whether stationed in Afghanistan, Iraq or any other locale around the world, our soldiers continue to bravely serve our country. They risk their lives each and every day for our freedom. But it’s not just these brave men and women we're thankful for; their families are also sacrificing.
Smiles
Maya Angelou once said that if you have only one smile, give it to those you love. But if you have more, why not share them with others? Kids, of course, are the best at this, and if you look around this holiday season you’ll likely see plenty of smiling kids.
You
You challenge us to be better every day, let us know when we fail and praise us when we succeed. Most important, you read. For that, dear reader, we are truly thankful.
