Expert: Sioux Falls should pursue more air service
Posted: Friday, November 28, 2008
SIOUX FALLS (AP) -- A consultant says airport officials in Sioux Falls should go after increases in service despite airline flight reductions around the country.
Mike Lum of Sixel Consulting told the Sioux Falls Regional Airport Authority this week about service cuts in major and budget airlines due to the economic collapse and soaring fuel costs the past two years.
But Lum said Sioux Falls is a different story because its economy remains strong.
Lum says airport has one airline seat for every 239 residents in area, offering service far ahead of competitors. He says opportunities exist to aggressively pursue more airline service by waiving landing fees and rents.
Hal Wick, Airport Authority chairman, suggests American Airlines might fly from Sioux Falls to its southern hubs. And Lum says Continental might be interested in flying from Sioux Falls to Houston.
