Morningside women move to 10-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Morningside's top-ranked NAIA Division II women's basketball team ran its record to 10-0 and in the process handed Oklahoma Christian, an NAIA Division I squad, its first loss of the season here Friday.
Morningside zipped to a 20-point halftime lead and went on to beat Oklahoma Christian 71-62 in the San Antonio Shootout.
Brittany Williamson scored 13 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Mustangs, who showed excellent balance en route to their 10th victory without a loss. Katie Sponder came off the bench to contribute 13 points while Autumn Bartel had 10.
Senior point guard Dani Gass, a two-time All-American, finished with seven points, nine rebounds and five assists. Laura Nelson scored nine points on three three-pointers while Leslie Foral and Ronnie Miller contributed eight points each.
Morningside raced to a 41-21 halftime lead as Oklahoma Christian shot just 5 of 24 from the field and committed 16 of its 28 turnovers. Oklahoma Christian, now 6-1, heated up in the second half to shoot 64 percent (16 of 25), but the nine-point deficit at the end of the game was as close as the Lady Eagles would come.
The Mustangs started fast, bolting to a 23-5 lead in the first nine minutes of the game. Oklahoma Christian trailed 54-29 four minutes into the second half before a 13-2 spurt brought the Lady Eagles within 56-42 by the midway point. Morningside, though, quickly increased the lead back to 20 points and it took a three-pointer in the closing seconds to cut the final margin to single digits.
The Mustangs had 17 steals, led by Bartel with five and Foral with four. Foral, a junior, was coming off a career-high 28-point outing against crosstown rival Briar Cliff on Tuesday.
Lisa Chenowith scored 15 points and Charlotte Heron added 10 points and nine rebounds for Oklahoma Christian, based in Oklahoma City.
Morningside plays Wayland Baptist here today with a 10 a.m. tipoff.
