Grandmother named Iowa Mom of the Year

Posted: Sunday, November 30, 2008
A Sioux City grandmother was the center of attention at halftime of the Nov. 8 University of Iowa football game, when she was honored as Iowa's Mom of the Year.

Gertrude Wiener of Sioux City was nominated for the honor by her granddaughter, Ligeia Pennington, a junior majoring in pre-social work and psychology. Wiener obtained guardianship of Pennington and her two sisters after their parents abandoned them. All three girls were under the age of 4 at the time. In the nomination letter, Pennington wrote that Wiener, 88, worked two to three jobs to support the girls without government assistance. She took the girls to church every Sunday and taught them they could "accomplish great things and come through hardships better than you were before them."

The Dad of the Year is Andy Rowe of Marengo, Iowa, nominated by his daughter Amy Rowe, a senior majoring in biology.

" WOW, this is wonderful honor for Gert!
THis has been along time coming for her, she has done so much for her family and has been so unselfish in her lifetime. I'm so thankful that she has an appreciative granddaughter(s) to honor her in this way. Ligeia pat yourself on the back for thinking of her this way. "
