SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Thanks to Autumn Bartel, Wayland Baptist's women's basketball team was never in the game Saturday morning at the San Antonio Shootout.
Bartel scored 10 of Morningside College's first 14 points and finished with 18 as the top-ranked NAIA Division II Mustangs rolled to an 80-58 victory. It was Morningside's second straight win in as many days over an NAIA Division I opponent.
Bartel, the team's leading scorer with a 13.8 scoring average, made three of her four three-point baskets in the first two minutes of the game and the third was good for a 14-2 advantage. From there, Wayland Baptist never pulled closer than seven points.
Bartel provided all of her offense in the first half as Coach Jamie Sale's Mustangs, now 11-0 for the season, rolled to a 46-27 advantage, thanks to 62.7 percent shooting, which included an 8 of 11 effort from beyond the arc.
Leslie Foral added 15 points, six rebounds and five assists for Morningside while Laura Nelson made four three-pointers in a 12-point performance. All but six of Nelson's 43 baskets this season have been threes.
Dani Gass finished with nine points, 12 rebounds, six steals and five assists. The East High graduate gave her team a 20-10 lead on a pair of free throws at the 14:22 mark, but Wayland Baptist's Jessi Howard responded with a jump shot.
Kayla Weerheim's jumper launched a 9-0 run that gave Morningside a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Rose Ouma led Wayland Baptist (5-3) with 18 points.
Morningside will play a Great Plains Athletic Conference game at Yankton, S.D., against Mount Marty Wednesday night.
