SIOUX CITY -- The USA Steak Buffet in Sioux City shut down today.
A woman who answered the phone at the restaurant, 902 W. 7th St., confirmed the closing but said only franchise owner Larry Miller could speak to the reasons behind the decision. Miller, a local businessman, was out of town today and could not be reached for comment.
USA Steak Buffet offered a daily lunch and evening buffet that featured grilled steak and other entrees, including burgers, chicken, barbecued ribs and fried shrimp, as well as an assortment of side dishes and desserts.
By this afternoon, the restaurant's oversize sign along Hamilton Boulevard had been taken down. According to a message left on the restaurant windows, customers with unused gift cards should call 402-397-0522.
The shuttering comes just weeks after another buffet-style restaurant chain, Golden Corral, opened its first Sioux City location, at Lakeport Commons.
Miller opened the first USA Steak Buffet in Norfolk, Neb., in 1996. The Norfolk location, which Miller sold to another franchisee, remains open.
According to its Web site, the Omaha-based USA Steak Buffet also has locations in Fremont, Grand Island, Kearney and Lincoln, Neb., Fairmont and Bridgeport, W.V., Washington, Penn., and Cambridge Ohio.

If your top priorities are sanitary conditions and quality food, why on earth are you eating at BUFFETS?!? "

It seems that you must like eating out where you get terrible service or you just don't seem to care. As a previous cook, the things I have seen would not have been tolerated anywhere that I have worked and as a result, I do make the places that I choose to eat at, meet a certain standard. You may want to eat at a restaurant where the health inspector should be closing the place down, but that isn't me. Seems to me that I am not the only one who wasn't happy with their business practices either. "
