FONDA, Iowa -- A Fonda, Iowa, man is in custody after police say he tried to stab another man Saturday with a knife.
Rex Lavell Thompson, 36, is charged with attempted murder, a class B felony; second-degree theft and second-degree criminal mischief, both class D felonies; aggravated domestic assault, an aggravated misdemeanor; and possession of prescription drugs without a prescription, and operating while impaired, both serious misdemeanors.
At 11:30 p.m. Saturday the Fonda Police Department responded to a domestic dispute at 401 E. Fifth Street.
The police department said in a statement released Sunday that upon arrival an officer heard the sound of breaking glass and saw a suspect flee the scene in a car stolen from the residence.
Officers learned that the suspect allegedly attempted to stab another man through the front door of the residence with a 10-inch military-style knife. The police department said large gashes through the door indicated that the suspect was trying to get to the man as he held the door closed.
The intended victim, Darrell Graves, and others at the residence were not harmed in the attack, according to Fonda Police Chief Alex Leu. Leu said Sunday that Thompson and Graves reside together with Graves' wife at the residence.
A Pocahontas County Sheriff's deputy stopped a stolen car near Iowa Highway 4 and County Road C66. Thompson, whom police said was injured while breaking out windows at the residence, was taken into custody without further incident. He was trying to flee to Chicago, according to police.
After an impaired driving evaluation was conducted on Thompson, he was transported by Pomeroy Ambulance to the Pocahontas Community Hospital and then booked into the Pocahontas County Jail.
