Adams County, Neb., treasurer faces recall effort

Posted: Wednesday, December 03, 2008
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) -- A Hastings man says he's turned in more than 4,000 signatures to force a recall election of Adams County Treasurer Julia Moeller, who faces tax evasion and other charges.

Marvin "Butch" Hughes needed 3,080 signatures by Dec. 9. He turned in 4,023 on Tuesday.

Even if all the signatures are valid, a recall election might not be held because Moeller has said she'll retire in January. Moeller says her retirement is not related to her legal problems.

Hughes says people in the community want to show their disapproval even if she does retire.

Moeller is accused of evading taxes by illegally registering a motor home out of state. The State Auditor's Office also found evidence she made short-term loans to herself using county money.
