Downtown shooting leaves one dead

UPDATE

By Molly Montag | Posted: Thursday, December 04, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- As her car sped down Gordon Drive, a Sioux City woman told police dispatchers she'd been shot by a man chasing her in another car, ramming it into hers.

The call came in at 10:26 p.m. Wednesday, but the woman's attempt to escape ended minutes later in front of the Tyson Events Center, where a man police say was her estranged husband rammed her car a final time.

The impact sent her white four-door car careening into a utility pole at the corner of Gordon Drive and Pearl Street, where she crashed.

Sioux City Police spokesman Lt. Marti Reilly said the man led officers on a short car chase that ended when he crashed into a semi-tractor parked on the east side of the Tyson Events Center parking lot.

Officers heard one or two shots, Reilly said, observed the man struggling with his weapon and then heard a final shot.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police did not identify the man late Wednesday, but said he was from Sioux City.

Firefighters used an extrication device to free the woman, who also was not identified, from her car.

She suffered from a gunshot wound to the left arm, Reilly said, but her injuries did not appear to be life threatening. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City.

It was not clear late Wednesday if the woman was shot while inside her car, Reilly said, but there were bullet holes in her vehicle.

Police also did not identify where the incident started or what may have prompted it.

" A WAKE UP CALL? get real. the police enforce the voilation of a NC order everytime they are reported. but often it is dropped for a number of reasons by a number of people. the dept. can not go around and assign an officer to protect every person that has a NC order. what ignorant statement to make. "

" Wow, Just seen the police video on the news tonight, that was quite disturbing! It's just fortunate that no inocent bystanders got hurt-thankfully. My prayers go out to the family, but as for him.....I'am glad the S.0.B. is dead "

" HOW IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A WAKE UP CALL TO THE SCPD GRANNY?? WHAT ARE THE POLICE SUPPOSED TO DO?? IF ANYTHING IT SHOULD BE A WAKE UP CALL TO THE LAWMAKERS. THE POLICE CAN ONLY MAKE AN ARREST WHEN SOMEONE VIOLATES THE ORDER. GET A CLUE. "

" If this isn't a 'wake up call' to the SCPD, I don't know what will be.

Perhaps now they will pay attention to 'no contact orders'.

From personal and extended reference...they've dropped the ball on that for that past.....ohhh....say....17 years. "

" this was some crazy stuff that happened last night. She is very lucky to be alive. And I'm thankful all the officers involved are okay too "
