South Sioux City girls down East, 63-48

When you're a young girls basketball team -- and East High certainly is -- all a coach can ask for is improvement.

Although the Black Raiders have gotten off to a 1-3 start after a 63-48 loss to Nebraska's defending Class B state champions from South Sioux City Thursday night, Coach Dan Pomerenke's inexperienced squad gave the Cardinals all they could handle.

"We weren't very happy with our performance, 29 turnovers is way too many," said South Sioux City Coach Kelly Flynn. "I know East has had some tough games here early in the season and when you play against tough competition it does make you a little tougher. They definitely looked better tonight than they did when I saw them play earlier.

"They made us work and it was definitely not a knockout punch."

East's three losses, by the way, are to North, Sioux Falls Washington and South Sioux City. North is ranked No. 2 in Iowa Class 4A and Washington is South Dakota's defending Class AA state champions.

Sophomore Tristen Sharp scored 17 points and senior McKayla Knudson, a returning all-stater, added 16 for the Cardinals. South Sioux City, which captured its 11th state title last season, moved to 2-0.

Sarah Carothers, a senior guard, finished with 11 points and hit double figures for the second straight game. The Cards, though, turned the ball over 29 times.

"If you can still come away with a win on East's floor it's a nice thing," said Flynn. "We'll get another game tomorrow night and a few practices before next week to get ready for North."

South Sioux City, which opened the season with an 82-38 rout of Omaha Duchesne last Friday, hosts North next Thursday.

Seniors Brianna Mozer and Ashley Vanderloo paced East with 13 and 12 points, respectively. East also had trouble holding on to the ball, committing 31 turnovers while shooting 15 of 26 from the free throw line.

"They made us scramble, but I thought we made them scramble more," said Pomerenke. "I really felt our pressure made them work hard. We had opportunities to cut the score down but didn't put the ball in the hole. We turned the ball over four times in a row in the third quarter when we had chances to score.

"I thought the effort was there, so I'm proud of the kids. We're improving, but you've got to stop improving and start winning. Three of our last four games have been state tournament teams and I think we've gotten better."

East hit its first four shots of the game and had a 9-6 lead before the Cardinals scored six unanswered points and eventually led 20-14 after one quarter. The Black Raiders stayed with South Sioux in the second quarter, too, pulling within 32-30 on a basket by Taylor Michaelson with just over two minutes left in the half.

It was 36-31 at intermission and the Cardinals scored the first three baskets of the second half, capped by a Kodi Fischer layup to make the score 42-31. South Sioux City led 53-48 heading into the fourth quarter, which consisted mainly of turnovers by both teams (10 for the Cards and seven for East).

South Sioux City outrebounded the Black Raiders 41-28, led by the 6-foot-2 Sharp with 10 caroms. Brianna Mozer had eight rebounds for East while SSC's Fischer had seven steals.

The South Sioux City junior varsity downed East 54-47, led by Kelsey Miller with 14 points and Brooke Olson with 12. East's Micayla Weaver tallied 12 points.

East hosts Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson tonight and South Sioux City travels to Dakota Valley.
