East girls can relax after victory

Finally, for Brianna Mozer and her East girls basketball teammates, a time to relax.
Same thing for veteran coach Dan Pomerenke, who's expecting another grandchild at any time.
Brianna Mozer scored 16 points for the Black Raiders, who played for the third time in the last four nights Friday, this time against winless Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. Brittney Mozer added 13 points and Ashley Vanderloo tallied 11 as the tired squad woke up in the last 12 minutes of the game to take a 60-40 Missouri River Activities Conference triumph.
"It'll help, being able to rest now after playing three games in a week," said Brianna Mozer, who scored 11 of her game-high total in the second half as East ended a five-game losing streak.
"We switched offenses in the second half and we were able to hit the open girl better. We played more intense and moved the ball better."
"This is an example of being exhausted physically and mentally after playing two big games this week against Washington and South Sioux City, a pair of No. 1-ranked teams," said Pomerenke, whose team is idle until next Friday when they play an MRAC game at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.
"It took two-and-a-half quarters to wake up. In the middle of the third quarter, we got pressure on the ball and we executed offensively."
East (2-5, 1-1 MRAC) forced 33 turnovers, but wasn't always able to take advantage of Thomas Jefferson's inexperience. Amanda Coffelt scored 11 points off the bench to lead the Yellowjackets and gave her team a 35-32 lead on a pair of free throws at the 2:21 mark of the third quarter.
But from there, it was all East. Brianna Mozer stole a pass and floated in for a layup. Fouled on the play by Jessica Flowers, Mozer made the free throw to tie the game and launch a 9-1 run in the final minute and a half of the frame.
Then, 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, Brittney Mozer had a steal and made a three-point basket after Vanderloo's assist for a 44-36 lead.
The three started a 16-0 run for East, which didn't allow a basket until the 1:03 mark when Emily Arnold drove in the lane to lift Thomas Jefferson (0-6) within 57-38.
"It was a hard-fought game for three quarters," said Thomas Jefferson Coach Nicole Vetter. "When you face a team like East, if you let up, you're going to pay."
Emily Keilman scored eight points while leading East's junior varsity to a 34-14 triumph.
