Blaine clips North boys

Posted: Saturday, December 13, 2008
MARSHALL, Minn. -- In games North's boys basketball team has lost this season, they've always started slow.

Undefeated Blaine, Minn., jumped to a 13-4 lead and never trailed while whipping the Stars 60-47 Friday night at the U.S. Bank Tipoff Classic hosted by Minnesota Sports Preview magazine. University of Minnesota-Duluth men's basketball recruit Dylan Rodriguez scored 24 points for Blaine, which took a 36-17 halftime lead.

Southwest Minnesota State recruit Billy Giddings added 11 for Blaine. Giddings and Rodriguez combined for five three-point baskets.

"With four minutes left to go in the first half, we were down by four, then we turned the ball over a couple of times," said North Coach John Vanderloo. "I thought in the second half, we played well, took care of the ball, we got the ball where we wanted to and we were playing with passion and with a purpose.

"When you start a game against a great opponent, you can't get yourselves in a hole. We did a good job battling back. I'm happy we showed character in the second half, but you also hope to start well in a game."

Blaine, which will play one of six games today in the tournament, is now 3-0 for the season.

Kendall Wingert scored 14 points for North (1-2) while Alex Walker added 12.

North will play at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson next Friday.
