City touts year's top accomplishments

By Lynn Zerschling | Posted: Friday, December 19, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- Major medical expansions led the list of the city's top 10 accomplishments in 2008, City Manager Paul Eckert and city employees announced on Wednesday.

St. Luke's Regional Medical Center broke ground on a $14 million expansion project, while Mercy Medical Center completed a $17 million capital campaign. Other medical clinics expanded.

"We have over $70 million in capital investment in 2009. There are more than 500 new high-paying jobs and we retained more than 400 jobs," Eckert said. "Those don't count the hundreds of other jobs added that are not on this list."

Eckert said other top accomplishments were:

-- Use of the Targeted Jobs Withholding Tax Credit program for CW Suter, Fed Ex, Wellmark, All Power and five medical clinic projects.

-- Completion of the last two blocks of Fourth Street downtown project, which helped the business district in the other, and other city streets projects.

-- The continued redevelopment of the former stockyards area.

-- Sioux City's presence in national rankings for economic development, it's recognition as one of the best small places for business and careers and it's status as the most affordable housing market in the country.

-- The "Home Again" campaign to recruit young people back to Sioux City, and a new Web page at www.locatesiouxcity.com.

-- The opening of the Hilton Garden Inn on the Missouri riverfront as part of a conference center, Bev's on the River restaurant and marina complex.

-- The addition of several new stores and restaurants to the Lakeport Commons area, continuing the city's commercial and retail growth.

-- The relocation and expansion of several new businesses in the Bridgeport Industrial area, and progress on the Southbridge development.

-- The expansion of recreation opportunities with the creation of Legacy Park in Whispering Creek and completion of the Perry Creek Trail.

" I truly believe the number one top accomplishment for Sioux City should be that Rev. Hoffman and mysterious Rev. Rochestor have been able to turn our - We The People - our City Hall - The Peoples Government - now into the Church of Reverand Hoffman/Rochestor beliefs. They both have been able to completely forget that they were elected at City Council Members to take care of City busines and not their own personal religious agendas. We all know now why former Mayor Craig Berenstein had no goals of running again. Look what he would have had to work with. Thanks Craig for the years you gave us - but we need you back to clean things up. "

" So is the accomplishment using the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit or increasing job opprotunities in Sioux City?

Re-opening of Fourth Street? Thats our best construction project...What about the heavily touted Transit Avenue?

Redevelopment of the Stockyards or Econ. Dev. giveway

"Home Again" this is an accomplishment??? I thought it was a joke.

Hilton Gardens... give me some river front property and I'll develop something too.

This list seems more like an attempt to justify Dougherty's paycheck than a list of City accomplishments. "

" If those are the top accomplishments I would say what a low point in the history of Sioux City. Where are the jobs? The good paying, good benefits, full time jobs where you can support a family on one job instead of working 3 low pay, part time, no benefits jobs. "

" I believe the top number one accomplishment for Sioux City has to be that the City Council has maintained their image for yet another year as Siouxlands premier 3 ring circus clowns. You can't beat them for entertainment. "
