SIOUX CITY -- Major medical expansions led the list of the city's top 10 accomplishments in 2008, City Manager Paul Eckert and city employees announced on Wednesday.
St. Luke's Regional Medical Center broke ground on a $14 million expansion project, while Mercy Medical Center completed a $17 million capital campaign. Other medical clinics expanded.
"We have over $70 million in capital investment in 2009. There are more than 500 new high-paying jobs and we retained more than 400 jobs," Eckert said. "Those don't count the hundreds of other jobs added that are not on this list."
Eckert said other top accomplishments were:
-- Use of the Targeted Jobs Withholding Tax Credit program for CW Suter, Fed Ex, Wellmark, All Power and five medical clinic projects.
-- Completion of the last two blocks of Fourth Street downtown project, which helped the business district in the other, and other city streets projects.
-- The continued redevelopment of the former stockyards area.
-- Sioux City's presence in national rankings for economic development, it's recognition as one of the best small places for business and careers and it's status as the most affordable housing market in the country.
-- The "Home Again" campaign to recruit young people back to Sioux City, and a new Web page at www.locatesiouxcity.com.
-- The opening of the Hilton Garden Inn on the Missouri riverfront as part of a conference center, Bev's on the River restaurant and marina complex.
-- The addition of several new stores and restaurants to the Lakeport Commons area, continuing the city's commercial and retail growth.
-- The relocation and expansion of several new businesses in the Bridgeport Industrial area, and progress on the Southbridge development.

Re-opening of Fourth Street? Thats our best construction project...What about the heavily touted Transit Avenue?
Redevelopment of the Stockyards or Econ. Dev. giveway
"Home Again" this is an accomplishment??? I thought it was a joke.
Hilton Gardens... give me some river front property and I'll develop something too.
This list seems more like an attempt to justify Dougherty's paycheck than a list of City accomplishments. "
