Friendship lights Advent candle
Friendship Community Church which meets at the Bluffs Area Family Center at the corner of South Lewis Boulevard and Topaz Drive in Sergeant Bluff will light the fourth Advent Candle of Love during the worship service at 10:25 a.m. Sunday. Pastor Verlyn Schaap will share a Bible Talk on the Good News About Jesus. Coffee, juice and bagels will be served at 10 a.m.
Lessons and Carols service
The First Lutheran Church of South Sioux City will present its annual Lessons and Carols Service during worship services at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The cantata, arranged by Eleanor Tasker, director of choirs, is based on the hymn "From Heaven Above" by Martin Luther. The cantata will feature the senior and children's choirs, the Burnished Brass Bell Choir and congregational singing together with narration. Jay Rector and Jane Krogh will offer special keyboard and piano duets and accompaniments for the choirs. The Rev. Jerry Gilbreath is pastor of the church.
Jill Miller at First Assembly of God
Jill Miller will present a Christmas concert at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the First Assembly of God, 4420 Cheyenne Blvd.
A Sioux City resident, Miller has been singing most of her life. In July of 2002, she realized a dream when she headed to Nashville with her sister, Barb, and recorded her first CD of original songs entitled "My Offering." She now is releasing her third CD, entitled "Christmas Is Here."
In April of this year, Miller was named "Siouxland Woman of the Year" by Quota Club in honor of her volunteer work in the community.
Concert at Cornerstone
Cornerstone World Outreach will present the Cornerstone Worship Band in concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the New Worship Center at 1625 Glen Ellen Road. This Christmas concert is open to the public and is presented in celebration to the people of Sioux land. There is no entrance fee; however, a free-will offering will be received. The concert will present the true story of Christmas interpreted through a variety of music styles including Gaelic, Motown, classical, and acoustic.
Pro-Life Prayer Service
The Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens, chaplain of Trinity Heights, will be the prayer leader for the Siouxland Interfaith "22nd of the month" Pro-Life Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Monday at the Circle of Life at Trinity Heights, 33rd Street and Floyd Boulevard. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held in the Marian Center.
Cantata at Immanuel
The choir of Immanuel Lutheran Church, 315 Hamilton Blvd., will present the Christmas Cantata, "Do You Hear What I Hear?-- Listening to the Spirit of Christmas," at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Alison Bondy is the minister of music. The Rev. Tess Panamarow, pastor, will share the message.
Christmas programs
The Sunday School children of Riverside Lutheran Church, 1817 Riverside Blvd., will present their Christmas program at 4 p.m. Sunday. A "Birthday Party for Jesus" will follow in the fellowhip hall and include an evening meal.
The First Evangelical Free Church, Ninth and Douglas streets, will present a Christmas program at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. The Sunday School children and youth group will be featured with music and recitations. The adult choir will present the musical "Heaven and 'Earth Rejoice" with narration.
Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1401 Geneva St., will celebrate its annual Christmas program at 6 p.m. Sunday with the theme, "A Night in Bethlehem." Each member will be taxed one canned food item. Those who fail to pay the tax will be sentenced to a holiday season without the true spirit of Christmas. Sunday morning services will be at 8:15 and 10:45 with the Rev. Dr. Floyd E. Brown, pastor.
"The Comings of Christmas" is the theme of the Christmas program at 6 p.m. Sunday at Good News Baptist Church, 3200 W. 19th St. The program will feature instrumental and vocal music, recitations and readings presented by members of the church.
Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dakota Dunes, will present a festival of readings and carols at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Kevin Vogts, pastor, will sing "Long Ago, Prophets Knew," and the choir will perform "This Peaceful Night" accompanied by violinist Myron Boes. The Sunday School Christmas program will be at 4 p.m. Sunday.
