Work continues at Iowa scout camp hit by tornado

Posted: Saturday, December 20, 2008
LITTLE SIOUX, Iowa (AP) -- Cleanup continues at the Little Sioux Scout Ranch, which in June was ravaged by a tornado that roared into western Iowa.

All hiking trails in the 1,400-acre camp have been cleared of fallen trees. But work to clear debris in the camp's North Valley continues.

Construction is under way on a new Welcome Center, and a new North Shelter will be built in the spring.

The tornado struck on June 11, killing four Scouts, including three from Omaha, and injuring 48 others.

The Mid-America Boy Scout Council expects repairs to cost $2.5 million. So far, nearly $1.4 million has been donated.

Reopening is scheduled for May 2.

The camp is about 40 miles north of Omaha, where the council is based.
