Briefs: Kobayashi/Gray releases second CD "Feminissimo!"

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Susan Keith Gray, professor of music at The University of South Dakota and a pianist with the Rawlins Piano Trio, and violinist Laura Kobayashi of Washington, D.C., announce the release of their second CD, "Feminissimo! Women Playing Music by Women."
"Feminissimo!" is a mixture of romantic and contemporary character pieces and sonatas written by composers of Spanish, French, Norwegian, American, Polish and Czech heritages. The American works represent African-American and Jewish-American influences. The disc, produced by Albany Records, features nine compositions, including four world premier recordings from contemporary composers Elisenda Fabregas and Emma Lou Diemer, and by early 20th century composers Anna Priscilla Risher and Signe Lund. Other composers included are Grazyna Bacewicz, Florence Price, Meira Warshauer, Pauline Viardot-Garcia and Vitezslava Kapralova.

AKRON, Iowa -- The Best of Broadway live performance will be at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at The Akron Opera House.
The Best of Broadway will feature the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the world's most successful and prolific musical theater composers. The show begins with a driving, exciting rendition of Sunset Boulevard. Revisit the powerful rock musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, the thrilling strains of Evita, the playfulness of Cats and the heart-pounding rhythms of Starlight Express. Then explore timeless melodies from By Jeeves, Song and Dance and Aspects of Love as well as the soaring passion of Phantom of the Opera, the longest running show in the history of Broadway.

The Betty Strong Encounter Center has rescheduled Katie Admire's Christmas season music program for 2 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, Encounter Center, located on the Missouri Riverfront, exit 149 off I-29. Admission will be free.
The popular singer's Dec. 21 performance was cancelled due to severe weather.
Katie became known as "Siouxland's Idol" when she advanced last season to semi-finalist on the highly rated TV show "American Idol." She is studying at Belmont University, Nashville, Tenn., in preparation for a career in the country music industry. Katie is a Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School graduate.
Katie's Encounter Center show will include a range of familiar Christmas songs.
In addition to her national television appearance, Katie has performed throughout the tri-state area. She won the Nebraska State Fair Galaxy of Stars talent competition; the Colgate Country Showdown in Okoboji, Iowa; and was a semi-finalist in the Bill Riley Talent Competition at the Iowa State Fair.

Fun Movie Day will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, 4500 Sioux River Road (Hwy 12). Showing will be the documentary film, Arctic Tale, which follows the epic struggle of a young walrus and polar bear and the saga of survival amid the rapidly changing Arctic wilderness. The movie running time is 86 minutes.

The 55th annual Northwest Iowa Honor Band Festival will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 in Eppley Auditorium at Morningside College. Approximately 225 high school musicians from 44 area high school will combine their talents. Membership was chosen through auditions held Nov. 1 in Storm Lake.
The festival will feature two bands of equal size and instrumentation. The bands will rehearse throughout the day preparing music selected by the guest conductors. Conducting this year's festival will be Dr. Scott Weiss and Dr. William Carson.
Weiss is the director of bands and associate professor of music at the University of Kansas where he conducts the KU Wind Ensemble, directs the graduate program in wind conducting, and guides all aspects of the university wind band program.
Carson is director of bands at Coe College, where he conducts the concert band and the senior honor band, teaches clarinet, conducting, and music history courses and serves as administrator for the annual Jazz Summit and Festival of Bands.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets will be available at the door.
