South Sioux City bounces back in shootout

NAPLES, Fla. -- South Sioux City's girls basketball team went from playing its worst game of the season to its best game in a span of about 24 hours.
Playing without University of South Dakota recruit McKayla Knudson, a 6-1 senior who suffered an ACL injury in Monday night's practice, the defending Nebraska Class B state champions fell 64-58 to The Community School of Naples Wednesday at the Naples Daily News Holiday Shootout. However, Coach Kelly Flynn's Cardinals bounced back Thursday with a 76-38 rout of Naples Lely in a consolation game.
Tristen Sharp, a 6-2 sophomore, had double-doubles in both games for South Sioux City, which will take a 4-2 record into this morning's 11:20 (CST) game against Shootout host Barron Collier.
Sharp had 23 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Community, then recorded 29 points and 10 rebounds against Naples Lely.
"Both nights we went with Tristen as our go-to player and she responded well," said Flynn. "Tonight, especially, she finished well. She's moving a lot and is really attacking the boards.
"We played so much better than the first game. It was our first game without McKayla and it took us a while to play.
"Tonight, we talked them into coming out and playing with confidence. There was more hustling for rebounds and more hustling for loose balls."
Kodi Fischer scored 12 points and Hillary Palsma added 11 in Thursday's triumph. South Sioux City jumped to a 22-10 first-quarter advantage, then extended its lead to 46-29 at halftime.
Because of equipment malfunctions, statistics were unavailable, but Flynn said his club limited themselves to an unofficial seven turnovers.
Chilly shooting hurt the Cardinals in the loss to Community. Trailing 12-10 after the first eight minutes, South Sioux City, playing for the first time since falling 63-54 to Sioux City North on Dec. 18, was outscored 18-9 in the second quarter.
"We missed a lot of chip shots in the first half," said Flynn. "A lot of its was little bunny shoes we normally make. We missed six free throws and two of them were front ends. We missed 15 threes when we had wide-open looks. When you're playing a good team and you miss those chips shots, it's tough."
Michelle Woods scored 28 points for Community, which is ranked third in Florida Class 2A.
Palsma scored 11 points for the Cardinals. Nikki Hanish grabbed nine rebounds as Flynn's club had a 37-24 advantage on the boards and also forced 17 turnovers.
Today, South Sioux City will face a Barron Collier club that features three key players, all sophomores, from a team that went 31-3 and won last year's Class 5A state championship. Carleigh Watts is a 6-foot sophomore while classmates Kristine Masour and Saphria Philson stand 5-11 and 5-6, respectively.
Flynn learned about Knudson's ACL after she underwent an MRI Monday. She averages 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.
"It's going to be a tough matchup with McKayla," said Flynn. "We still hope to have her back at the end of the season. We'll wait and see what the doctors and the trainers say when we get back."
Today's game will be broadcast on Sioux City radio station KWSL (1470 AM) with Pat Kavanaugh providing play-by-play.
