Year's last baby wins gifts, tax break for mom

Posted: Saturday, January 03, 2009
SIOUX CITY -- Lisa Bultmen will get a $3,500 break from Uncle Sam because she gave birth to her son before midnight Wednesday.

Bultmen, 21, of Haywarden, Iowa, and Craig Doty, 23, of Alcester, S.D., will receive a gift basket from H&R Block today. The company will also complete Bultmen's 2008 tax return for free because Braylon Doty, born at 8:42 p.m. on New Year's Eve, was the last baby born at St. Luke's Hospital in 2008.

Tricia Reusch, a spokeswoman for H & R Block at 3219 Gordon Drive in Sioux City, said mere minutes can mean major tax savings for parents at tax-filing time.

"Babies born on Dec. 31 provide parents with a retroactive tax exemption for all of 2008," Reusch said in a news release. "To get that same tax break, parents of babies born after midnight on Jan. 1 will have to wait until they file their 2009 taxes -- in 2010."

Bultmen said she was trying for the 2009 New Year's baby, but her son wouldn't wait.

Not that the couple is disappointed. "It's kind of exciting," the new mom said.

Reusch said she's excited to award Bultmen a gift basket that includes a diaper bag, changing pad, company clothing, bib, hand sanitizer and baby blanket.
