Zach McCabe, taking three days off from basketball during the week to play a little football, was in rare hoops form Saturday night in Bishop Heelan's 76-41 sprint past visiting North.
McCabe pumped in 21 points, 15 in the second quarter when the No. 1-ranked Crusaders turned the Missouri River Activities Conference duel into a rout.
The explosion by the 6-7 junior, who gunned in three of his four three-pointers in a 26-10 outburst, powered his team to an insurmountable 47-18 lead at the break.
"I got some great looks and some great passes from teammates,'' said McCabe, who was in San Antonio, Texas earlier in the week participating in the select United States Army All-Star football camp in the Alamodome.
"I had a great experience in Texas, but I was glad to get back with the basketball team,'' said McCabe. ''We're just letting it roll right now and having lots of fun. We're playing very good teams, but I think we're up to the challenge.''
The football camp in Texas, by invitation only to almost 400 high school underclassmen from across the country, included approximately 40 quarterbacks.
McCabe quarterbacked Heelan to an unbeaten season and Iowa's Class 3A title last fall.
Heelan dominated from the outset, taking a 21-8 leader after a quarter.
Crusader Brennan Cougill, the 6-9 University of Iowa signee, added 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
"We shot the ball very well, but the thing I told our guys at halftime that I was most proud of and satisfied with was limiting North to 18 points,'' said Heelan Coach Tom Betz. "It was a great start and everybody contributed.''
The Stars had major difficulties in the first half getting the ball to their leading scorer, Nick Tillo. Tillo, averaging 16 points a game, finished with 11, but touched the ball just three times in the first half when he collected a basket and two free throws.
Alex Walker contributed 10 points and had seven rebounds, matching Tillo's carom total.
North Coach John Vanderloo held a long closed-door session with his team after the contest, keeping the Stars in the lockerroom for almost 40 minutes.
"We didn't just play badly in the first half,'' said Vanderloo. "It was a complete disaster for two quarters.
"We didn't adapt mentally or physically to anything Heelan was doing. All due respect to them, but, wow, were they making shots. They shoot like that I don't think anyone can beat that team.
"As well as they shot the ball, we were just that bad. When you play the No. 1 team in Iowa basketball you've got to have a better effort than we gave. We were a little better in the second half.''
The Stars, now 2-3, turn right around and meet another No. 1, Iowa's 4A co-leader Linn-Mar, late Friday night in the CNOS Classic at the Tyson Events Center.
The Stars were just 5-for-26 in shots from the perimeter and didn't sink a three-point attempt.
Riding the long range bombing of McCabe, the Crusaders, now 5-0, wound up connecting on nine of 21 attempts from beyond the arc.
North won the sophomore game 49-41 with Dan Schweder leading the way with 14 points and Josh Jensen adding 10. Alex Malloy tallied 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Heelan and Joe Rossiter tossed in 11 points.
It was Heelan's first loss in four outings.
