Wayne State hot in second half of win over Bemidji

WAYNE, Neb. -- David Walters matched a career high with 21 points for Wayne State's men's basketball team, which shot 73.9 percent in the second half of Saturday night's 81-60 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Bemidji State.
Walters went 3-for-5 from three-point range in the second half for Wayne State (6-6, 2-3 NSIC) while Jonathon Thomas made all five of his second-half shots en route to 18 points and 13 rebounds. Brian Metz was 5-for-7, overall, in a 12-point performance.
Elijah Miller provided 11 points, seven assists and three steals for Coach Rico Burkett's Wildcats while Brent Jackman added 10 points and six rebounds.
Wayne State shot just 34.5 percent while trailing 36-34 at halftime. The two teams traded leads five times in the second half until the 15:29 mark when Walters made a three-pointer to give the Wildcats the lead for keeps, 43-41.
Bemidji State (3-9, 2-4 NSIC) rallied from a pair of six-point deficits to pull within 51-50 when Seth Haake made a free throw to complete a three-point play after he was fouled on a layup by Zane Abner. However, layups on two consecutive possessions by Metz and Thomas launched a 30-10 run for the Wildcats in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Patrick Cassidy came off the bench to lead Bemidji State with 13 points.
Wayne State will be on the road next weekend, facing NSIC action Friday at Minnesota-Crookston and Saturday at MSU Moorhead.
