Dakota Avenue paving wins excellence award

Posted: Tuesday, January 06, 2009
SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- The Dakota Avenue paving project that kept motorists in South Sioux City on detours much of the summer and fall has received the 2008 Award of Excellence in Concrete Paving in the municipal category from the Nebraska Concrete Paving Association.

The award will be presented during the association’s annual conference Thursday in Lincoln, Neb.

Engineering design for the project was done by Olsson Associates, the concrete paving contractor was Sioux City Engineering Co. and the concrete was supplied by Siouxland Concrete.

The paving of Dakota Avenue from 10th Street to 29th Street started in July and was completed in October, several months ahead of schedule.

The project was done in phases to allow the least amount of disruption to area businesses and traffic. In total, 31,500 square yards were paved. The project is considered unique because the paving method is concrete overlay, which is faster and less disruptive than total replacement.
