HINTON, Iowa -- A Siouxland man faces six felony charges for allegedly operating a meth lab in an abandoned farmhouse near Hinton, Iowa.

According to a statement from the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office, Marlo Arthur Petersen, was arrested Thursday on felony charges of manufacturing more than five grams of methamphetamine and possessing precursors ether, acid, pseudoephedrine, lithium and anhydrous ammonia.

Petersen, 34, made his initial court appearance Friday. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 16 in LeMars, Iowa.

According to the police statement, deputies found the lab about 1:50 p.m. Thursday while investigating a complaint of suspicious activity at an abandoned farmstead at 30894 Kestrel Ave.

They allegedly detected a strong smell of chemicals, found a meth lab in the house and located Petersen in an upstairs room.

According to an inventory list, police executed a search warrant and seized tools, batteries, coffee filters, a scale, nasal decongestant tablets and a small glass pipe.

Several other items were sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

According to court documents, the farmstead is owned by Melfred Petersen.

An official with the Plymouth County Jail said Petersen was being held Friday on a $100,000 cash-only bond.

" I wish I had a glass house to live in, I would treat it with respect, The day I found out my child was on meth, I took the the steps to have him rehabbed, it was a long process and is still continuing, meth addicts cant feel so they dont understand what thier family and friends are going through, I am sure his wife wished she had done things differently when she first found out, we all can second guess ourselves, but you have to deal with what is in front of you, he belongs in jail in order to get some help. "

" CONT... Also you would be then responsible if they did flee to pay all that money. If you would, then you would deserve that.Bailing him out doesnt help. He needs to be there to get help. You know, try to get clean, sober, realize what he has done to himself and everyone around him. Letting him out wont. He will find a way to use to help him through this situation!! If you know a meth addict personally then you would know they dont care how anything affects everyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

" Do any of you read before you begin to post??? I have personally known this person and watched them slip into this disaster. I was one of the 1st people to try and help him and he refused knowing full well what he was doing was WRONG!!!! So if that is the case you let them go to find their own pathways and if prison is where they end up it is his own fault. I work int he medical field so I dont need how the drug works and so forth to understand. So yeah I guess I can sit here and say that I do know what is going!!!! Also I dont feel that the people who do those terrible things like murder, rape and prey on children should get a light sentence in anyway if they are caught. My point is that no one should feel sorry for him because he is stuck in jail for this!!! There is a difference READ what is said and process the info dont just rant!!! Would you be willing to post that much money on someone not knowing if they would flee?? Knowing how much trouble they are in?? "

" cont'd...Text books say meth is one of the most powerfulest. I think our Judicial system is wrong and is failing us. Many people with these drug convictions will never have freedom again...even more sickening is 1st time drug offenders with no priors get these huge bonds and sentences! I am not saying in any way that it's OK to use, deal, or make drugs. But how can murders, rapists, and perverts do less time than the "methhead drug dealer"? Or worse yet the sickos who do those crimes to children seem to just get a slap on the wrist and let out to INTENTIONALLY harm another innocent child. You tell me, who would you rather have in your neighborhood? The guy whom in privacy uses or makes meth or the guy whos preys on children or woman to rape or murder? Somethings not right!! "

" I am not for half a second blaming this man's wife OR saying he's the victim. In fact I strongly believe that she will too suffer, probably more than him...not to mention the humiliation and embarassment. And actually yes I have a loved one who had this problem...almost identical situation. It's probably one of lifes most difficult battles...on both ends. With having a very close family member being an addict for many years I PERSONALLY do know the effects and PAIN it can cause to EVERYONE involved! All these outsiders lookin' in really can't relate or judge unless they've been there! My point of my 1st comment is that there is something extremely wrong with society today! Yes, MOST of us are adults here and do know the difference between right and wrong. Most of these addicts or manufacturers are not getting high intending to hurt anyone or anything in any way. Even though that is in most cases the end result, that's not the reason why they do it or make it!!! And they may see everything falling apart around them or know the trouble they can face...BUT THEY DON"T FEEL IT!! THEY'RE NUMB! METH is very powerful! "
