Those crazy "Glee" kids already have a CD out -- and they haven't even completed their first season on television.
Take that, "American Idol."
Like the popular singing competition, "Glee" covers a wide range of material. In addition to show tunes (obvious), the cast members offer their own takes on "Gold Digger" and "Bust Your Windows," a real departure. (Interestingly, "Rehab" isn't on the first CD. What up?)
Still, there are plenty of surprises, Kevin McHale (Artie) does a mean "Dancing With Myself" while guest star Kristin Chenoweth one-ups Lea Michele in their "Maybe This Time" duet. Chenoweth even gets the final (albeit overdone) note.
"Don't Stop Believin'," the gold-selling single that shot to the top of iTunes is here and it's still a rouser. Chenoweth's "Alone" has power as well.
Michele and Chris Colfer duet on "Defying Gravity." At times you can't tell who's singing -- that's how matched they are.
Michele also gets props for Rihanna's "Take a Bow" (could a solo album be far behind?) and adds plenty of flourish to the group numbers.
What you quickly discover is even the lesser singers in the bunch are pretty darn good. Put them together and "Glee" becomes a variety show for the new millennium. The CD? It's the perfect way to keep the joy going between episodes. Pop it in your CD player and you'll realize it's a great wake-up call, afternoon delight or evening's entertainment.
