Laurens-Marathon teacher wins state award

DES MOINES -- A Laurens-Marathon teacher received the 2009 Iowa Excellence in Education Award and a Sibley-Ocheyedan High School teacher was selected as a runner-up for the award, according to a news release.

The winner is Nancy Kunickis, a reading and language arts teacher at Laurens-Marathon Middle School in Laurens. Mike Earll, a vocational agriculture teacher at Sibley-Ocheyedan in Sibley, is the runner-up. They were nominated by colleagues, students and community members.

Kunickis received a $450 Staples gift card, $1,000 and her school received another $1,000 from the Iowa Farm Bureau. Earll received a $100 Staples gift card.
